Melbourne On The Horizon

Day 3

We tried to leave Lorne early but overslept a little... so it was already boiling by the time we left. We hurled through Lorne, back onto the Great Ocean Road. We passed more beautiful scenery, passing a few cars that we'd seen overheating on the road the day before. We made it to Apollo Bay without too much hassle, and took a cooling walk on the beach, splashing through the water. Then we filled up the car and kept on moving.

Somehow, we made it to Geelong. The poor car way dying, but kept chugging along. We pulled into the petrol station and literally spent the next half hour in the shop there - the woman pointed to the coolest spot in the place, once we'd fed her our story of woe. We talked to the mechanic there, who told us that we'd be lucky to make it another 5kms, but he filled us up and let us keep going anyway - we were only 90kms from the city!!

At first, we thought we'd make it... but 40kms out, the car was spluttering like a lawnmower and we pulled into a roadstop. We were probably about as hot as the car at this point, so we spent the next 45mins sitting in Subway. We ate lunch, i had a nap; i'd been driving most of the way and the driver's seat was hotter than the passenger side, so the heat was killing me. Finally, FINALLY, by some not-so-small miracle, we made it to the West Gate Bridge - - - MELBOURNE, BABY!

City driving was no mean feat. But, eventually, with a few misdirections, we made it to our awesome St Kilda Hostel. We were in the 'sanctuary' - a 6-bed, girls only dorm that scored us free drinks everynight. With a bright pink wall, comfy and clean beds, a pumping bar downstairs, internet, a kitchen, cool people from the Netherlands, Canada and Iraq... we were happy chappies. That is, until we went to the mechanic, who told me that my car was dead. It would cost more to fix the blown head gasket and the few other problems than the car was worth. I was devestated.

I LOVE my car. It's reliable, quirky, so much fun... i adore it. And now i had to leave it in Melbourne, all alone, to await the wrecking yard.

I shed some tears and drove dear Thomas back to the hostel. That night, neither of us were in a great mood. Loz was tired, i was mourning my darling car. We cooked spaghetti, (burnt) toast and noodle soup for tea, then hit the internet for awhile, before crashing into our comfy beds.

It was our longest day yet - the heat had been insane and the traffic (thanks to the heat knocking out lights and trams) was crazy and we hadn't really seen many sights. But we'd finally made it to Melbourne (killing my car in the process), so at least that was something.

Now we had three and a half days to see Melbourne in all of it's melting glory. First stop, the aquarium!
