Shoot For The Stars

I was pondering the other day why movie starts get paid so much. Hundreds of thousands - or sometimes millions! - more than other occupations earn. Why is that? I know they provide a service to the community in that they allow escapism to run riot. However, really, the service that they provide is more visible, but not more crucial than many others. They're not doctors, or social workers, or nurses, or psychologists... Even artists in other forms of media (painting, photography... mime?!) don't get anywhere near as much. When did society decide that it was ok to pay actors and producers enough to pull a third world country out of debt was ok?! And when did adctors start thinking that it was ok to accept that much - and not give back to society?!

This is a pet hate of mine. I really just don't understand how people can think that this is ok when there are so many starving people in the world!
