Rockin' The Boat

Loz and i went to see The Boat That Rocked on tight ass tuesday (woot for $9 movies!), equipped with coffee and mega muffins. We weren't really sure what to expect; honestly, we only went to see if because we felt that it would be silly of us to spend $9 seeing 17 Again again. Two and a quarter hours later, we had most definitely changed our minds.

It wasn't just an all star cast and some awesome sixties rock music, the movie was awesome all over. It was about a group of men (and one lesbian woman, who they said didn't count as a woman...) who lived on a boat in the middle of the North Sea and ran a 24-hr-a-day pirate rock and roll radio system. Sex, drugs and rock and roll, baby. The government resented their popularity and free thinking ways, so spent most of 1966 trying to shut them down. Eventually they succeded, but it was a technical success and not a popular one. The end of Radio Rock sparked controversy accross the UK.

The movie was hilarious; put that many men in a boat together for long periods of time and you're in for a laugh. The men - all oddballs - found community and acceptance in the music. One of the main characters, a young man named Kyle, was sent to live on the boat to 'straighten out' - and find his father. The boy was an oddball, but found his place in the world of music. When Radio Rock was going down (literally), the men risked their freedom to stand up for what they believed in.

It was a really good movie - comedy, a cute boy, awesome tunes, a feel good message... definitely reccomended viewing. And for those of you who doubt my taste in movies, well, that's just your loss.
