We had our first tute for our Professional English class the other day (basically, an hour and a half on basic grammer... the tutor actually used the phrase 'an apostrophe is just a comma, but up higher'...). However, there was some attempt at intellectual stimualtion, when the tutor asked us all to introduce ourselves and say who we'd have a coffee or beer with - dead or alive - if we had the chance, and why.
The poor tutor, his attempt at intellectualism failed miserably. We had answers such as Angelina Jolie, Jessice Alba, some sporting guy, George Clooney... someone threw in the classic Gahndi, but other than that we were pretty shallow! Personally, with my 'Colin Firth - because i love him', i think i raised the bar (and possibly gave others the feeling that they, too, could drop to the celebrities). I was going to say 'Jesus', but i didn't really want to get off on the religious foot in the first class.
For a group of second and third year students, who are supposedly intelligent and worldly, we didn't exactly blaze with maturity and knowledge... i think our tutor was hoping for more answers like Kevin Rudd, George Bush, our long-lost great-grandparents, Jesus, Charles Dickens - answers along those lines.
Well, this is just further proof that society is completely materialistic!
