Well, it's day five of the family holiday and we're all proceeding relatively unscathed!!
After getting up at half four on saturday morning (not an easy feat when you only got home two hours earlier), it took two plane flights and a car trip to arrive in port douglas. That's lots of family time in a confined space. But, being sick and exhausted, i slept most of the way! When we arrived we went and saw George the giant groper fish... he was a little shy and we only saw his tail above the heads of the crowds...
Sunday saw us get up early and go to the markets - they were awesome! Plenty of nifty jewellery to keep me happy and lots of food to keep my ever-hungry brother quiet. It was a pretty quiet day - everyone was tired still!
Monday was awesome - we went on a tour to the Great Barrier Reef. It took an hour and a half on an enormous boat to get out there, and once at the destination we donned gorgeous (re: absolutely foul) blue lycra suits to swim in. The reef was amazing! I was co-ordinated enough to snorkel and the colourful fish and coral were a sight to behold. We had lunch, and afterwards Nick, Dad and i went on an 'adventure' tour; basically, twenty people went on a little boat to snorkel in a different area. We got to hold sea cucumbers, coral and the like. Some people saw sharks, and we all saw where the reef ended and the sand dropped off into deep, scary ocean (a la Finding Nemo). It was a long day, but the reef was unbelievable so it was 100% worth it. It was so good that i could even tolerate the huge group of obnoxious americans who were on board!!
Yesterday, mum and i shopped, but in the afternoon we all drove to Mossman Gorge. Surrounded by the beautiful fringes of the Daintree rainforrest, we walked the paths until we came to the swimming lagoons. The water was bitterly, but so lovely and fresh!! Nick, Dad and i swum for awhile, fighting the strong current and sliding over the mossy rocks, until Dad started tiring and i began to wonder if i'd have to stage a rescue mission. Thankfully, we all made it out ok!
Today, the weather is a little miserable (hence the net cafe), but hopefully this arvo we're headed to the Daintree and a little town called Kuralta... it's supposed to be breath-taking. I'll keep you posted.
