Last night, after my rewarding day of study at uni, i went to see Made of Honour with some of the girls. It was great! I'd heard mixed reviews, and not all of them were favourable, so i wasn't really sure what to expect - luckily, i was pleasantly suprised!
The movie plot line was admittedly somewhat predictable. Boy and girl are best friends, girl is getting married, boy suddenly realises he's in love with girl, boy then goes through all sorts of drama to win the girl back - happy ending inevitable.
However, i'm not one of those people that thinks the plot line is what makes or breaks a good movie. I watch dozens of movies, that all have a similar plot line and i can watch them all, without getting bored. Why? Because, really, they're all completely different! It's not the plot that's crucial to the enjoyment level, it's the characters, the setting, the jokes, the lines and the 'vibe'.
Made of Honour had all of these things, and more. The fact that it starred Patrick Dempsey was a good start; who can resist that man? He's charming, cute in that older Colin Firth way, has a smile that makes your knees go week, looks great in a shirt and can somehow look amazing standing on a boat. Draw card number one. Add that to the fact that this movie was genuinely funny, with the whole cinema in peals of laughter and completely immersed in the movie (to the point where i nearly fell of my seat in anguish during a particularly stressful scene), and the movie gets even better. Throw in a gorgeous Scottish/New York setting, a host of great supporting actors and actresses (including Busy Phillips from Dawson's Creek!) and cute dogs, and you've got a movie that i, at least, would consider a success.
So, next time you want a pick-me-up, i definately think this should be on your 'must see' list. Completely worth the $9 we paid for it.
