We've started a girls group at church. The boys have their own, and we felt left out, so this is our very own counter-attach. Tonight was the first one that i've come to, and we've picked a book that we're going to look at. It's the girls version of the book the boys studied; it's all about what women want to be and how to achieve that.
Despite the fact that the book is written by two people who are sickeningly sure of themselves and have written a book so choc-ful of metaphors and flowerly language that it makes me want to gag, we read the first chapter and i'm not totally against it. I just have to put aside the white knights, the heroes, the princesses. Plus, the story about the moose that made us all think of Pocahontas was pretty cool. I'll fill you in on the first chapter. It says that women want three things...
1. Women want ROMANCE
Apparently, all women want is romance. We have a feverish desire to find someone who will pursue us, who will stop at nothing to break past the barriers we put up for protection and get to know the real us, because they want nothing more than to be with us. Some of us deny it. Maybe some of us can do so legitemately, i don't know. But i know that i can't. I do want that. And i've never really had it. I was sitting in a room full of women who either have boyfriends, have had boyfriends or have been loved. I can give opinions on it all i like, i can think that i know what i'm talking about. Sure, i know my feelings. But i've never had a guy pursue me, so i can't really talk. It was fairly embarassing, sitting in that room. I'm sure nobody else even noticed, but i did feel inferior. Someday, i'm sure that the romance that all women want will be something that i've experienced. Then, maybe, my opinions will be different.
2. Women want an ADVENTURE
3. Women want to find BEAUTY
Whether it's just what society has instilled in us, or whether it's a desire that's taken root deep in our soul, women want to be beautiful. They have no trouble in finding the beauty in a flower, in a sunrise, in a child. We just can't find the beauty in ourselves. We see the people around us and we feel inferior. No matter what we look like, we want to look different, better, more beautiful. The book says that we need to learn to love ourselves. Corny, yes, but true. We need to learn to look past what society says we are and just be ourselves. But it's a fact that we want to find that beauty, even if we're not very good at it.
Let's face it. The book is going to raise some interesting issues. I'm almost looking forward to next week.

2. Women want an ADVENTURE
I know that i want that for a fact. I'm always looking for adventure, i wish that i could be the hero. The book said that everybody wants an adventure; but that not everyone wants to be a hero. Maybe some people want to be the sidekick. I have to admit that, while i'd like to say that i'd be content being the sidekick, i'd much rather take the starring role. Logically, i can say that i'm probably more the sidekick type. But, in my imagination, i'm the hero. Not always, but just sometimes i'd like to be the one who saves someone. No matter what, i want my life to be an adventure, i want it to be exciting!
