Dating Out-Dated?

More Social Ineptness On My Part

Recently informed that when a girl and a boy are 'boyfriend-and-girlfriend', their outings are no longer considered 'dates', i became confused. Again. In my head, if you went on an 'outing' with a guy who you have a 'thing' with, this classified as a 'date'. Apparently, things changed and i missed the memo. However, while i'm informed that i'm 'dorky' if i use the word 'date', i am yet to be supplied with an alternative. If a guy and a girl go to a movie, this isn't a 'date'... but what is it? An 'outing'? Or do we just call this 'going to a movie with "this guy"'? In my head, that just seems to make things more complex... can someone come up with a new word to replace 'date'?!? This no-using-the-word-'date' thing is mighty annoying -- especially if i'm not allowed to say things like 'P&H are "dating"'. They are! But, to retain some semblance of 'coolness', i must refrain from saying so. The most commong alternative is to say that 'P&H are "hooking-up"'. But this ISN'T the same thing! You can 'hook-up' all the time, without 'dating' them! (I'm not even going to get started onthe term 'hook-up' - which, for some reason, always puts an image of hanging curtains in my mind...) *Sigh*

Can someone put me out of my misery (but not by dropping a brick on my head if you don't mind) and explain this new teenage societal regulation? Geez... maybe i should check that the Committee for Teenage Affairs has my address right, because i seem to be out of the loop on a lot of stuff...

And so ends the 'post of many 'inverted commas'
