This arvo i went to see Australia with Mr.Music and Loz. I've got to say, i was really not excited to see it. I was going mainly because i felt that it was my duty as an Australian to support the movie... i felt very patriotic.
(Almost) Three hours later, it was over. As of yet, i'm still largely undecided about how much i liked it. Nicole Kidman got steadily prettier, the more Australian (re: dirt covered and smiling) she got. Hugh Jackman was less lovely than i know he can be. The scenery was beautiful, the suspense was good (yes, i panicked when i thought bad things were going to happen), there was a gorgeous horse and some cute kids. There were a few discrepancies... like the blone, white-skinned kids labelled half-caste aboriginals, or the mention of the High Court, which was not established for about another forty years.
I think the worst thing was the 'cringe-factor', mainly seen in the incredibly corny lines. There were far too many 'crikey''s, and various other hideous lines. I think that if you watched the movie with no sound, it'd be a great movie... the plot was pretty good, i liked it. Also, half way through i thought i'd reached the ending, but it kept going for another hour or so.
I think i liked it. I liked the ending. People should see it. However, i don't think it's the epic, amazing, awesome movie that is unlike no other and will be forever remembered as a masterpiece. Maybe ol' Baz Lurhman dropped the ball a little on this one. Definately not his best work. So, go and see it expecting an exciting love story set in war-time Northern Territory, rather than the greatest movie of 2009, and you'll be right.
