We were doing a problem question in law today, about Freegans. Basically, a freegan was scavenging in a bin out the back of a shopping centre and was attacked by wild dogs. But that's irrelevant. The funny thing is the definition of 'freegan'.
We all admitted that we had no clue what a freegan was (yes, we law students admitted that there was a teeny, tiny gap in our knowledge). Thankfully, the uni had supplied the Wikipedia definition to help us out!
Basically, freegans salvage discarded, unspoiled food from supermarket garbage bins, that have passed their best-before date but are still edible. They're anti-consumerist; they participate minimal consumption of resources, and love community, social concern, freedom, co-operation, sharting... Basically, they're against society becoming more materialistic, apathetic and conformist. They reject competition and greed. These people aren't homeless, they're just making a political statement.
It's truly bizzare. Surely there's a better way to make a political statement against consumerism than to eat out-of-date food from dumpsters? I haven't thought of an alternative yet, but i'm working on it.
Maybe if these people stopped eating out of the bin, less of them would be attacked by wild dogs.

Maybe they have no choice....
that's my point - they have a choice. this isn't a case of their having no other option than to forage for their food. these people aren't homeless or poor, the choice to eat from the garbage is meant to make a political statement.
Gotcha.
Glad you liked the Meme.
Happy, happy
