Last night, on somewhat of a whim, SportingBuddy and i went to a concert. It was at the Thebarton Theatre, which we found only after getting lost twice and going to the Entertainment Centre first by mistake. Surprisingly, the Thebby was much more theatre-like than concert-like; there were all sorts of mouldings, fancy light fittings, cool balconies... It was a very chilled place, which fitted the mood for the night.
First up was Old Man River. We got a little suprise when we realised that Old Man River was a single guy, and not a band, but we quickly changed our pre-conceptions when we realised that this guy was cool! He sung a few songs, got us on board and even invited us all up on stage to join in on one of his songs! It was very awesome to watch a row of the audience up on stage, singing along and dancing with him. The guy himself had the big, curly hair and the chilled out rocker-tee, a la Kurt Cobain. Go buy his album. Love him as SB and i now do.
After the traditional concert between-acts wait, NEWTON FAULKNER emerged! Think waist long dreads, english accent and a face that was older than i had pictured, but not in an icky way. He was absolutely amazing. Considering the fact that i had been in two minds as to whether or not i should even spend $50 on the ticket, i was pretty stoked with the concert. This guy could do the most amazing things with a guitar ever; he tapped the strings, used it as a drum and used pedals to make bizzare sounds... often all at once! It may sound weird, so you may have to see it to believe it... but the vibe in the place was just unbelievable. All these people, singing along, doing actions to UFO, singing the chorus to the Billy song while he conducted us... it was one of those concerts where you could stare up at the singer and FEEL the music resonating inside you. It was amazing. He was amazing. SB and i were in heaven. You could literally look around, and see the love for the music reflected in everyone's eyes. Thebest thing about him? When he was singing, he'd just be smiling to himself, obviously so content in himself, and so pleased to be singing to us all. The look on his face, one of such peace and happiness, was just so unepected, an d so rarely seen in my world. He was at home on the stage, which meant that his music flows, his jokes were actually funny and it felt more like an intimate gig than a full on concert.
We left, high on the music. And, i was home before half eleven, which was fantastic, because i had time to sleep before working in the morning.
Best $50 i've ever spent.
