What Is The World Coming To?

I just caught the beginning of the news. After hearing all of the Olympic updates, which took up the first ten or so minutes, they moved on to less important news items - for example, the war between Russia and Georgia.

I can't believe that the war comes second to Olympic news. It sure shows what people's priorities are. Sports over soldiers. I'll admit, i didn't know about Georgia, and i'd never even heard of its neigbouring country, Azerbaijan. I thought of Georgia as an American state. It's appalling that the youth of today (and trust me, i wouldn't be the only one with such a lack of knowledge) know so little about the world. Right now, troops are marching in and out of the Georgian boarders. There was a temporary truce, through which the soldiers exited the country but missiles and bombs were still used. For the citizens, it's hell. They don't understand why their President started a war that he didn't have the means to continue, and had no idea how to win.

People are dying. Children and parents and families are being destroyed. And we care more about which sports our country is winning. The Georgian athletes are still in the Olympics - maybe that's close enough. I think people need to get their priorities straight. There are Olympics every four years. This war is bigger than that, and we should show our support however we can, even if all that we can do it be aware of what is happening in our world.

Excellent perspective.

The Olympics are certainly fun, and they give us a sense of worldwide cooperation . . . till the news comes on.
