Tonight, we were watching Kevin Rudd get off the plane in Beijing for the Olympic Games. It's hard to believe that time has rolled around again! It seems like yesterday that the last Olympic Games was being held. But, i digress. When i was watching our PM disembark, i realised that many other countries were probably doing the same thing. All of these world leaders, gathered in one place... What a perfect target!
It wasn't so long ago that the world seemed to be on high alert for any possibility of a terrorist attack. After the horrific incident with the Twin Towers, and the Bali and London bombings, everyone was speculating about when the next attack would come. However, it's been a few years since the last major attack, and people seem to have calmed down a little.
The footage on the news this evening showed hundreds of soldiers, policemen and members of the bomb squad - they were on high alert. Probably a good thing. If i were a terrorist, i wouldn't be able to think of a much better target than a bunch of world leaders gathered in the one place, surrounded my smog and the top athletes from every country... you could do a lot of damage in one fell swoop. One plane, one bomb... a morbid train of thought, to be sure. But if i've had it, you can bet that terrorist cells have had the same idea.
Let's just hope that the soldiers in Beijing are on their toes.
