I had my first moot this afternoon! It was for my Contract Law class, and basically had to argue that my client was given a house by a friend but that she had neither acted in good conscience, nor forced the friend into giving it to her. I was quite prepared, but still terrified at the thought of the judge throwing questions at me that i had no idea how to answer!
It was a bizzare experience - we had to dress up in 'professional' clothes. That, in itself, was a chore! I had to buy black pants, and eventually ended up borrowing a shirt from mum, but i came off fairly well! With my fair pulled back, i looked like quite the little lawyer. One of the boys saw me and said he didn't even recognise me when i was so dressed up.
The moot itself went pretty well. The judge threw questions at me, but i managed to field them, with answers that were at least plausible, if not perfect. I did a reasonable job of adapting my argument as i went along and kept my demeanour steady. Sure, i was nervous, and that probably came across at first (as i'm sure i'll see when i have to watch the video back later this week), but overall, i think i did ok. I definately did better than some of the other people in my moot.
I did discover that one of the women in my moot was a total cow, who backstabbed my team with false accusations and misleading reports, which were total rubbish. Geez, you see the true side of people when you face them in court!!
Either way, i'm done and thrilled to be! FREEDOM!! ...Or at least something resembling it... My first experience as a 'proper' lawyer is complete!
