Never A Dull Moment

One Disaster, Then Another

I babysit lots, for a number of different families. But i seem to have more than my share of babysitting disasters. Granted, i've always managed to get myself and the kids out of things ok. But it is somewhat annoying.

There was the time when the boy i was looking after had an asthma attack. It wasn't too bad, at first, but throughout the night his breathing just kept getting worse. His ventilator didn't work, steam didn't help, steady breathing didn't work - nothing worked. I couldn't get on to his parents and left a million messages. Eventually, they got home - and took the boy to hospital. Thank goodness they came when he did.

Then there was the family of little boys who's mother had just committed suicide. Very difficult family to deal with (understandably).

I had one little boy in hysterics, making himself sick because he was crying so much - but his mother woulnd't answer her phone (I hate parents who go out and don't turn their phones on!). The poor thing eventually wore himself out.

You can't forget the mischief that OnlyThirteen (the thirteen year old, sex obsessed boy i've mentioned before) gets up to on the phone with strange girls and running off to Brompton. That's always an incredibly tricky situation.

Last night, it was a black out. Out go the lights, on come the waterworks from the six year old. There's no torch, the fuse box was undisturbed (apparently the whole neighbourhood was out) and, worst of all - at least in their minds - the television went off. Eventually, we found a tiny torch and the boys discovered that they could watch Incredibles on the laptop. I rang the parents to let them know and they came home. It ended well though - i made almost $50 for two and a half hours work!

All's well that ends well... let's just hope that i never have a worse disaster.

Annie
