After years of women fighting the feminist-fight, progress is turning up in the literary world. I've been reading some fantasy adventure stuff lately (because yes, i am that cool) and i've noticed a pattern. Instead of finding the usual 'must protect the King' stuff that is often found, the books revolved around the Queen being the strong warrior type.
In Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta, it admittedly does seem like the entire story revolves around finding the lost-lost king and returning him to the throne. However, *spoiler alert* in the end we find out that the secretive novice that has been travelling with Finnikin is actually the long-lost queen in disguise. She saves her nation, blah blah blah. Very empowering for women.
The other series that follows this pattern is the Chronicles of the Icemark by Stuart Hill. Thirrin becomes Queen at 14 when her father is killed, and she wins the epic battle - and finally the war - against the psychopath Scipio Bellorum. Go Thirrin! In the second book, her daughter is the Crown Princess and saves the army from being destroyed. More girl power.
I like that these books, as much for guys as for girls, are all about the women fighting the battles and winning the war.
