Last night was the annual Cathedral Concert at my old school. Think gorgeous cathedral, hundreds of girls, yards and yards of blue material, and lots of carols. This year, four of the girls from my year were invited to sing with the Old Scholars Choir. The song was old fashioned and simple. There was nothing technically wrong with it... but when we'd been at school, we'd been a part of the ChanterElle ('She Sings') choir, an Acappella choir that was known for sounding absolutely stunning. We heard ChanterElle sing last night, and they were fantastic. So when we stood up to sing, we felt a tad embarassed that we weren't up to our old standard. We were so jealous of those girls. However, after the concert, everyone said we'd sounded really good (we're pretty sure someone slipped them something before they listened to us), which made us feel a little bit better. Aside from our slightly different performing, the concert hadn't changed much. The carols were fine, the girls were the same (some looked a little older). There did seem to be an explosion of bible readings though. I swear, there are usually nowhere near that many!!
Amusing anecdote: one of the women sitting next to us was drinking brandy from a pop-top... apparently it was the only thing that relaxed her enough to swallow her pills! But she skulled the whole thing before the second carol was over, and nearly fell off her chair at the end of the concert! She was a real character.
After the concert, we caught up with our favourite choir conductor, Ms. Hart (formerly Miss Spence, then Mrs Fisher, then Miss Spence... We've settled on Trish, or sometimes Spullerish, to keep things simple), who was thrilled to see us. Deep down, i know what all of us young old scholars want... we want a young old scholars choir, and we want her to conduct... but none of us have the nerve to ask! Damned polite upbringing. We saw a bunch of other old teachers, who haven't changed at all, and were all seemingly pleased to see us. Which was cool. Aside: we didn't run into the new headmistress. Which gave her no opportunity to ask me how 'environmental studies at Melbourne uni' was going. I dislike that conversation. Correcting people with my stock-standard 'i'm doing law-psychology at Flinders uni' isn't my favourite past-time.
Afterwards, a bunch of the girls from our year who'd sung, or watched, went for coffee (and we got lost en route). We decided Magnum Egos were the best way to go. AND we came up with a new tagline for them; 'they're better than boys!'. Ha, we're hilarious. One by one, the girls left, until only three of us were left. We again thought ourselves hilarious when we decided that we should hire people to narrate our lives, like they do in the movies. Wouldn't that be cool? *Annabel sat, writing on her blog, amused by the hilarious concepts that she and her friends come up with...* By 11pm they were kicking us out and we'd run out of plans to make, so we headed home.
It was a good night, we all had fun and are looking forward to our next singing experience... we all miss our awesome school choir so much though!! It was great catching up with the girls - we don't see each other very often and find ourselves pretty funny. Good times.
